5.17 Cancellation of leave

You may be paid some of your costs if you have had leave approved and it was cancelled for Service reasons.

Leave cancelled before it starts

If you are told that your leave is cancelled you may claim for accommodation costs, fares and other unavoidable costs. If you can get a refund from the provider, you will be expected to do that instead.

Leave cancelled while you are on holiday

If you are away from home on holiday and your leave is cancelled, a decision will need to be made about what you will do. You might be able to go to work for a short period and then resume your holiday. Your family might even stay in the holiday location while you work. You may be needed for a longer time and have to cancel the holiday altogether.

What you are paid depends on what you do with the holiday. It might include these costs.

·          Your travel costs. This might be a return cost, if you interrupt your holiday to work.

·          Travel costs for your dependants. If you interrupt your holiday, dependants' costs may only be paid if they have a need to return with you. An example might be children who cannot stay on their own.

·          Accommodation costs you have not had the benefit of.

·          Other holiday costs you have not had the benefit of.

This is not a complete list.

If you can get a refund from the provider, you will be expected to do that instead. This would include where an airline is willing to change the date of the return flights for you.

Application to Reservists:  No, except for Reservists on continuous full-time service.
