5. LEAVE

5.1 Introduction to leave

Leave provides an opportunity to take a break from work, or in some instances to attend to urgent family matters.

Many types of leave are listed in this Chapter. To be absent from duty on leave you will need the approval of your Commanding Officer or supervisor (except for maternity leave, which cannot be refused – see 5.5).

Some leave is granted for special purposes. Usually it is not an entitlement. It is only granted at your Commanding Officer's or supervisor's discretion.

During periods of high workload you may find that leave will not be granted. Leave is unlikely to be granted during operational deployments.

If you are absent from duty without approval it may be considered a disciplinary offence under the Defence Force Discipline Act 1982.

You should use the Personnel Management Key Solution (PMKeyS) Self Service database (known as PSS) when you apply for some types of leave. PSS enables the electronic (paperless) processing of leave applications. Instructions on how to use PSS is at http://intranet.defence.gov.au/dsg/sites/PMKeyS/.
