4.7 Seagoing allowance
If you are posted to a seagoing ship, you will receive seagoing allowance. This allowance is paid to you because of the hardships that you face while at sea.
You might be paid seagoing allowance even if you are not posted to a seagoing ship. This is not very common. It might occur in these situations.
· You are posted to a shore establishment for service in a seagoing ship.
· You are posted to the Sea Training Group and liable to spend more than 100 days at sea in a year.
Rates of allowance
The amount of seagoing allowance is linked to the amount of time you have served on a seagoing vessel. It increases further as you spend more years at sea. The allowance stops when you are posted to a shore position.
If you are serving at sea on a ship but are not posted to that ship, then you might get hard lying allowance (see 4.5).
Boarding party
You will get an extra allowance if you board a foreign boat at sea. The boat must be involved with illegal fishing, customs or immigration activities.
Who is not paid it?
You will not be paid seagoing allowance if you are paid some other allowances.
· Some elements of special forces disability allowance.
· Some elements of specialist operations allowance.
· If you are getting Antarctic allowance, you will only be paid seagoing allowance if the rate of seagoing allowance is higher.
· If you are getting hard lying allowance, you will only be paid seagoing allowance if the rate of seagoing allowance is higher.
· If you are getting the disability element of submarine service allowance, you will only be paid seagoing allowance if the rate of seagoing allowance is higher.
· Arduous conditions allowance (boarding party element only).
· Deployment allowance (boarding party element only).
Application to Reservists: Reservists are entitled to seagoing allowance if they are serving on a seagoing ship, or are posted to a shore establishment for service in a seagoing ship. Reservists are entitled to the boarding party element.
