4.5 Hard lying allowance

Hard lying allowance is paid to members who have to stay on board a ship or submarine, but who are not actually posted to it.

The allowance is not paid until you have been on board for 48 hours. It is then paid for each day on board, from the first day.

The rate of allowance is linked to the amount of time you have previously served at sea.

Who is not paid it?

You will not be paid hard lying allowance if you are paid some other allowances.

·          The disability element of submarine service allowance.

·          Seagoing allowance.

·          Some elements of special forces disability allowance.

·          Some elements of specialist operation allowance.

·          Travelling allowance.

·          If you are getting Antarctic allowance, you will only be paid hard lying allowance if the rate of hard lying allowance is higher.

Application to Reservists:  Yes.
