1.5 Reservists

This book describes how conditions apply to Reservists. You will need to know some technical terms in order to understand the descriptions.

The Reserves means the Naval Reserve, the Army Reserve and the Air Force Reserve.

Reservists are members of the Reserves. As a Reservist, you are a member of the ADF.

Reservists may be on either Reserve service or continuous full-time service.

Reserve service

Only members of the Reserves may be on Reserve service. Reserve service is part‑time service which is paid on a daily basis. You may have to parade from one day or less to a number of full days in a row.

When you are on Reserve service you are paid a daily rate of salary (see 3.2, Salary).

Reservists who are doing days of Reserve service are not on continuous full‑time service. This is true even if you serve for a continuous number of days of Reserve service. Your Service must formally place you on continuous full-time service for it to take effect.

Members on Reserve service are not entitled to many of the conditions of service in this book. They are entitled to some others only under limited conditions. Some conditions of service are provided only for members on Reserve service.

Continuous full-time service

Permanent Forces (that is, full-time) members are on continuous full-time service. Reservists may also be placed on continuous full-time service by their Service. They then have to work the normal Permanent Force unit routine.

Reservists on continuous full-time service get most of the conditions of Permanent Forces members. This includes an annual salary and leave.

What category am I in?

If you do not know whether you are doing Reserve service or continuous full‑time service, you should ask your supervisor.

So what conditions apply to me?

Each section in this book has an entry called Application to Reservists. It explains how the section applies.
