12.2 Why is superannuation important?

Superannuation is about providing income for your retirement. Your retirement savings grow in two ways. You pay into your superannuation scheme, and Defence also pays into your scheme for you. Benefits are usually paid when you retire from the workforce. If you are discharged due to injury or illness you may be eligible to receive benefits from your scheme. If you die, your dependants may be eligible to receive benefits from your scheme.

ADF members pay into one of two superannuation schemes.

·          the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) Scheme. (This scheme was closed to new members on 1 October 1991).

·          Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS). This is commonly known as Military Super.

Why do you need to know about superannuation?

Superannuation provides for your future, so it is important to make plans early.  It can be complex so it is important that you know how your scheme works. This will help you to make decisions that will affect your future.
