11.3 Bereavement payment

In some circumstances, your dependants can get a payment, if you die while still a member serving on continuous full-time service.

Who is a dependant?

A dependant is a person who was financially dependent on you at the time of death.

How much do they get?

The payment is equal to four times your gross fortnightly pay. It is spread over four fortnights, effectively continuing your pay for eight weeks. It includes any allowances you would have been entitled to.

If you were not being paid at the time of death (due to leave without pay, for example), or if you have no dependants, no payment is made.

Is that all they get?

Your dependants may also have an entitlement to superannuation, or compensation. Information about superannuation entitlements can be found on the ComSuper web site at http://www.comsuper.gov.au . You should also refer to 11.2, Payment of financial entitlements on death.

Application to Reservists:  No, except for Reservists on continuous full-time service.
