Am I eligible to receive the MSBS Retention Benefit, if I have taken a period of leave without pay? |
The effect of periods of leave without pay (LWOP) on eligibility for payment of the Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) Retention Benefit is not well understood by many members.
LWOP in excess of 21 days can affect a member’s continuity of service and hence eligibility for payment of the Retention Benefit on completion of fifteen years continuous eligible service. All members who intend applying for the Retention Benefit should obtain advice before proceeding on LWOP in excess of 21 days.
LWOP, granted under certain circumstances specified in the Act, will maintain continuity of service provided the member continues payment of the employee contributions to the MSBS. These circumstances include, primarily LWOP associated with MATL and LWOP to accompany a serving spouse. Approval to continue payment of contributions should be obtained before proceeding on LWOP - by contacting ComSuper. |
