Hazardous Substances Safety Officers (HSSO) Course

Course Outline: This two day training program has been designed for personnel working within the Defence Organisation to assist them in managing Hazardous Substances in the workplace. The target audience initially is NCO’s or defence civilian equivalent and contracting personnel who act in a supervisory capacity. The program is designed to be interactive and consists of presentation material, case studies, group work and discussion. A workbook is provided for personnel to use and add notes to suit their own application. Additional handout materials will be provided at various stages of the training program.

The program addresses legal obligations, personal responsibilities and introduces a methodical approach to assist personnel in addressing key issues in Hazardous Substance management. A strategy that uses contemporary OHS Best Practice formalises the Risk Assessment protocol. It establishes the need for MSDS’s, Hazardous Substances register, Incident Reporting, Formal Risk Assessments, Control measures, Safe Work practices, Disposal mechanisms and monitoring both of the working environment and personnel.

The program concludes with an open book review which will confirm that Learning Objectives and Performance Outcomes have been achieved.

Duration: 2 days

Training Provider: The training is delivered by a contractor.

Venue: The training is delivered around the Regions in various locations.

Cost: Course fees are centrally funded. Participants' parent units are responsible for organising and paying for all costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals.
