Defence Occupational Noise (DON) Course

Course Outline: The Defence Occupational Noise (DON) course is designed to provide selected personnel with information and practical experience in basic noise measurements, regulations, management and control. The course includes human perception of sound and explains noise measurement and assessment with particular emphasis on Standards and Regulations relevant to the Defence occupational environment. The course also covers the basic concepts of noise control and lectures are supplemented with practical measurement sessions and tutorial exercises using instrumentation available within Defence.

Who is Eligible for the Course: Environmental Health or OHS personnel, or personnel who require in-depth knowledge on safety aspects of noise. Personnel who are required to fulfil the role of Safety Officers will be given priority placement on this course. It is desirable for participants to have a good level of Maths and Physics, preferably year 12 level or higher. It is assumed that participants may have no previous experience in noise measurement and analysis.

Assessment
:
Competency will be based on marks for class quiz, test, tutorial and experimental session reports. An individual assignment to be submitted four weeks after attending the course will be included in the overall assessment.

Instrumentation: Participants are requested to bring with them the sound level meter they would normally be required to use in their day-to-day duties. In addition, participants will need to bring with them a scientific calculator.

Venue: Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra

Cost: Course fees are centrally funded. Participants' parent units are responsible for organising and paying for all costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals.
