Defence Laser Safety Officers (DLSO) Course

Course Outline: This intensive Course is designed to produce personnel competent in the calculation of maximum permissible exposure levels, radiation hazard distances, protective equipment requirements for safe use of lasers in the field or in laboratories. Graduates from this course will be able to take on the role of Laser Safety Officer for their unit and will be able to provide advice on the effective management of the laser radiation hazards. The course includes theoretical and practical components and is assessed by a written exam at the end of the course.

Who is eligible for the course: Environmental Health or OHS personnel, or technical personnel who require in-depth knowledge on safety aspects of laser operation. Personnel who are required to fulfil the role of Laser Safety Officers will be given priority placement on the course.

It is highly desirable for participants to have a good level of Maths and Physics, preferably at year 12 or higher.

Cost: Course fees are centrally funded. Participants' parent units are responsible for organising and paying for all costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals.
