Defence Ionising Radiation Protection Officers (DIRPO) Course

Course outline: This intensive Course is designed to produce personnel competent in the determination of protective requirements for the safe use and handling of radioactive sources in the field or in laboratories. Graduates from this course will be able to take on the role of Ionising Radiation Protection Officer for their unit and will be able to provide advice on the effective management of ionising radiation hazards.

The course includes both theoretical and practical components and is assessed through a practical exam written exam and short assignments.

Who is eligible for the course: Nominees should be personnel who are required to fulfil the role of Defence Ionising Radiation Protection Officers in their units. The roles of the DIRPO are described in Annex B to Chapter 4 of ADFP 724, Ionising Radiation Safety Manual. Environmental Health or OHS personnel, or technical personnel who require in-depth radiation safety training are encouraged to apply.

It is highly desirable for participants to have a good level of Maths and Physics, preferably at year 12 or higher.

Duration: 5 days

Training Provider: University of NSW, University College.

Venue: Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra.

Cost: Course fees are centrally funded. Participants’ parent units are responsible for organising and paying for all costs associated with travel, accommodation and meals.
