Category 2 – Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue
There were six submissions for this category. A winner was selected and two submissions are to be commended. |
Winner: HMAS ANZAC Portable Pontoon
HMAS ANZAC staff conducted a risk assessment that resulted in the identification of a number of whole ship risk areas, one of which was the use of the FFH Accommodation ladder without a stable base platform. This solution was the use of a pontoon. The pontoon has been manufactured and engineered to fully meet all Australian engineering design specifications and now in use with pleasing results.

Winner: FIMA – Perth
FIMA Perth is an organisation confronted with several major challenges. One of the most significant has been to build a strong safety culture in an organisation that has an enormous personnel turnover. In recent years FIMA Perth has undergone considerable change, with the attitude to and management of safety being a significant aspect of this change. Subsequently, key personnel were tasked with conducting a needs analysis, formulating a strategic plan and implementing their recommendations, with the aim of enhancing awareness of workplace safety and developing a self-sustaining safety culture.
In recognition of excellence in the achievement of overcoming barriers experienced by Unit/Branch personnel in the attainment of excellence in workplace health and safety outcomes.

Winner: Mr Rodney O'Connor of F-111 Engines Business Unit Defence Materiel Organisation
As the EBU Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager, Mr. O’Connor’s core responsibility is the implementation and maintenance of the safety and environmental management systems. While Mr O’Connor is employed as the HSE Manager and Quality Adviser within EBU. What is not expected of individual unit HSE Managers is the requirement to develop and implement strategies for the health baseline testing, and ongoing monitoring of employees to meet Defence Safety Manual requirements. EBU now has such a system in place that may serve as a model for other Defence Agencies. This has been achieved largely as a result of the professionalism and leadership shown in this field by Mr O’Connor.
