Occupational Health Forum, 4 April 2006

The Defence Centre for Occupational Health (DCOH) held its first Occupational Health Forum on 4 April, 2006 . A number of high profile speakers were invited to address the audience to raise awareness of occupational health and safety (OHS) in general, current and emerging occupational health issues and OHS structures within Defence.

Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie , Vice Chief of the Defence Force spoke on the Defence OHS Strategic Plan and the Defence Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

Professor Andrew Hopkins, who was an expert member of the F111 Deseal/Reseal Board of Inquiry, briefed the audience on OHS management systems both within Defence and in other large organisations.

Mr Steven Grzeskowiak , Director General of Occupational Health, Safety and Compensation, Defence, elaborated on the OHS Strategic Plan and the cultural shift required to successfully integrate OHS into everyday functioning.

Dr Ian Gardner , Head and Consultant in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Defence Centre for Occupational Health overviewed current and emerging occupational health issues.

Colonel John Turner , Chief of Operations, Centre for Military and Veterans' Health spoke on environmental and industrial hazards.

Dr Sam Bruschi provided a brief on the toxicology of military aviation fuels.

The Hon Bruce Billson MP, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, officially launched the Defence Centre for Occupational Health. Media Release 012/2006 Tuesday 4 April 2006

Participants also received a briefing on the DCOH from Mr John Heggart, Director of DCOH. A brochure about the DCOH was also available to attendees.
