About Defence Safety Management Agency (DSMA)
DSMA operates within the legislative framework provided by the Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Act 1991, Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) Regulations 1991 and the Occupational Health and Safety (Commonwealth Employment) (National Standards) Regulations 1994. The roles and functions of the Deputy Directorates are as follows:
- Critical Hazard Management develops and implements policies and programs pertaining to Hazardous Substances Management, Physical Hazards Management and Contractor OHS Management.
- Radiation develops and implements radiation safety management programs for ionising, laser, radiofrequency and noise/vibration radiation.
- Emergency Management develops the framework for the Defence emergency management program as it relates to the Defence OHSMS.
- Regulator Relations manages and fosters the strategic relationship with both Federal and state OHS regulators (Comcare, Workcover, ARPANSA etc).
- Policy coordinates the development of Defence OHS Policy contained within the Defence Safety Manual Volumes (SAFETYMAN), providing strategic advice, exercising a quality assurance role across SAFETYMAN policy, and leads in a number of safety policy areas including psychosocial hazards, ergonomics, manual handling, risk, contractor management, heights, confined spaces, workplace safety generally and visitors.
