GOOLWA HOLIDAY CENTRE Location Situated at 'South Lakes', Goolwa, this centre is located 83 km from Adelaide on the river Murray, 11 km from the Murray Mouth and 2 km from the Southern Ocean. It occupies a unique position having a broad expanse of river water on one side and open sea on the other, making it one of the finest boating areas in South Australia. In the 1880's, Goolwa was a busy shipping town with 240 paddle steamers and barges operating through Goolwa on the River Murray trade route. As the Murray Mouth proved difficult for ships to negotiate, Port Elliot was used as the seaport from the River Murray trade. To transfer goods from Goolwa to Port Elliot 11 km away, a railway line was built in 1854 - the first to be built in Australia. It was horse drawn and continued to operate until a series of five shipwrecks at Port Elliot forced the authorities to abandon that port for the safer haven of Victor Harbour. This change of seaport and the establishment of a rail head at Morgan, some 320 km upstream, led to the decline of Goolwa as an industrial river terminal to what it is today - one of the leading holiday and recreational spots of South Australia.
Facilities Located on large grassed blocks, the accommodation comprises three modern air-conditioned holiday homes, featuring three bedrooms each, designed to accommodate a family of six. The main bedroom contains a queen-size (QS) double bed, the second bedroom contains two single beds and the third bedroom contains a double bunk. The homes come complete with large living and dining areas, modern tiled bathrooms, separate toilet and a laundry complete with washing machine. They also feature a spacious carport under the roofline of the house. The large kitchens come equipped with a modern electric stove, microwave oven and refrigerator containing a large freezer compartment. In addition, cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, toaster, electric kettle and electric frypan are provided. Other features provided include a 35-cm colour TV, reverse cycle air-conditioning and fans. There is a community playground and electric barbecue for use by guests. What to do at South Lakes The holiday homes are located adjacent to the first fairway of the South Lakes Golf Course. Two company memberships have been taken out for each home so that guests may enjoy an outing on the golf course. The course itself is a 5,735 metre, 18 hole, par 70 course with a rating of 68 and has fully grassed greens and fairways. The company memberships entitles the two occupants of the home to the full facilities for the club except entry to the club competitions. Other guests may play by paying green fees. The club house is fully licensed with excellent bar facilities and meals available at certain periods. The Lower Murray River is ideal for water skiing. The open beach is a noted surfing spot but it is not recommended for beginners. The Murray River at Goolwa and Hindmarsh Island across the ferry, are well known for fresh water fishing with Callop, Bream, Perch and European Carp available. Good fishing by boat is to be had in season in the salt water of the Coorong, Murray Mouth, Mundoo Channel and the Goolwa Channel below the Barrage.
