When you think of SMEs, they don’t come much smaller than Ruslyn Holdings Pty Ltd.

Established in Sydney in 1989, Ruslyn is a family owned company employing just four people. The company has been working with Defence as a Defence Recognised Supplier since 2005.

With the projected ramp-up in DMO procurement activity over the next 10 to 15 years, Ruslyn is typical of enterprises that may play a larger part in supplying to DMO during replacement or update to a huge part of the ADF’s capabilities.

Being a small personalised company, the staff who run the company know everything about their products, and are involved across the board in assembly, packing and distribution. It also enables them to maintain a high quality product, right through from research and development, to manufacturing, to production.

Ruslyn are able to maintain an up close and personal relationship with Defence and DMO and use this to their advantage by corresponding personally with numerous areas in Defence to promote awareness of their company and products.

The company’s mission is to supply high quality Mil spec, ergonomic, hand held reeling devices to Worldwide Defence, Emergency Services, Aerospace, Mining, Maritime, Broadcast, Energy, Geophysics and other industries.

They are responsible for the manufacture and distribution of the Ruslyn Cordwheel primarily to Defence and Emergency Services. The reel is used by Army, Navy and Air Force in Signals, Battlespace Communications, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Clearance Diving, Special Operations and Aerospace. It is also currently being used in the Middle East.

The Ruslyn Cordwheel is an ergonomic hand held, compact, lightweight (785 grams), rugged and stackable reeling device for the efficient handling and storage of cable, rope, hose, wire, chain and barrier tape.

The reel is UV stabilised and recyclable impact resistant polypropylene spool and a plastic handle. Cable can be collected or reeled out quickly and efficiently allowing tangle free safe handling and storage.

Ruslyn Cordwheels are able to be stacked vertically or on their sides for easy storage. The reel is a simple and easy to deploy reeling device with the potential for many more applications. It has been introduced into service and is open to the rest of the deployable defence user community.

Current customers of the reel are Defence Materiel Organisation, Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service and Police and Rescue.

The targets for Ruslyn Holdings at present are the Australian Defence Force and Emergency Services, as well as NATO member countries including United States Department of Defense, and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence. Recently the company has been listed as a supplier to the New Zealand Defence Force, with the first shipment of reels being sent early November.
