Raytheon Awards presentation

Raytheon Awards presentation. From left to right are: Ron Fisher, Managing Director Raytheon Australia; Rob Hemmings, Business Development Manager TR Corporation; and The Hon Bruce Billson MP, Minister Assisting the Minister of Defence.

VMS is unique among other Australian calibration organisations because of the number of specialist personnel it employs and its nation wide accessibility.

This small to medium enterprise (SME) employs more than 50 staff including 20 calibration technicians and has laboratories in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The company also has a mobile laboratory that enables it to provide calibration services on site throughout Australia.

Rob Hemmings, the Business Development Manager for VMS’ parent company TR Corporation said experienced calibration technicians are very hard to find, and VMS employs a large number of them.

‘We are the largest calibration laboratory in Australia from a personnel point of view,’ he said.

VMS has provided its calibration services on large Defence projects such as the F-111. This work has led to accolades with Raytheon selecting the company for its service excellence award at its inaugural SME ‘success together’ forum and supplier excellence awards in November 2006.

VMS now has a 15 year strategic partnership with Raytheon that sees the company as Raytheon’s preferred calibration contractor.

Mr Hemmings said that VMS credits its service excellence to open communication and an ability to seamlessly integrate with a client’s business operations.

He said calibration is an insurance policy. Out of tolerance instruments may give false information leading to unreliable product, customer dissatisfaction and increased warranty costs. They may also cause good products to fail tests, which ultimately result in unnecessary rework costs and production delays.

‘A typical commercial calibration references a manufacturer’s calibration procedure and is performed with a reference standard at least four times more accurate than the instrument under test,’ Mr Hemmings said.

All of the company’s laboratories are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities as well as being ISO certified ensuring traceability to standards of quality measurement.
