Micreo has extensive state-of-the-art test and assembly equipment.
Micreo Limited is a small to medium enterprise which has gained involvement in major defence aerospace projects including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) Airborne Early Warning and Control project (AEW&C).
The company produces sub-systems and components, which form the radio frequency front end or non digital part, of radar and electronic warfare systems.
Micreo Limited Managing Director Tim Shaw said the company’s products are basically part of the sensors that electronic warfare systems use in their role of intercepting and countering signals from radar systems.
‘We fill a niche in the aerospace electronic weapons market, with over half of our business in the foreign market with four Australian allies,’ he said.
‘We operate from Australia and utilise overseas agents to facilitate our international contracts.
‘This year, for the first time, we are going to be making more sales in Australia than internationally. We have had an international business focus since we were first established and take quite a bit of pride in the role we have played in establishing an Australian electronic warfare capability,’ Mr Shaw said.
Micreo Limited was the first small business outside the United States awarded a contract for electronic warfare work on the JSF, winning a contract with BAE systems to design, develop, and test specific components of JSF’s electronic warfare system in 2003.
ADF involvement in the System Design and Development Phase of the JSF opened the way for Australian businesses to participate in the United States led project.
Another significant ADF related contract is for the supply of electronic warfare work on AEW&C.
Australia is acquiring six of the aircraft and associated support and systems, with significant support from Australian industry.
Micreo Limited, founded in 2002 with only 18 personnel, has expanded to meet a significant growth in sales and opportunities. It now employs 57 people including, 14 engineers, 35 skilled technicians and assemblers, three quality assurance staff, and five general administration staff.
Further expansion is likely in the future with the company looking to expand its enterprise into the commercial market.
Mr Shaw said we are looking to commercialise our intellectual property which is applicable to ultra high rate optical communications.
‘We aim to consolidate our business by diversifying our customer base utilising the same product technology and infrastructure,’ he said.
