As a highly specialised niche operator, the ability to be flexible and responsive is just two things Walter Breunig, Director Hardware Engineering at Dedicated Systems Australia Pty Ltd believes are vital in achieving success.

The company’s extensive knowledge of commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware and software development tools combined with support services and training has lead to a close working relationship with Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and Defence Primes.

Dedicated Systems Australia Pty Ltd sell and support COTS software and hardware to Defence and other industries. Their products and services assist in reducing deployment time, design and life management. Their equipment is typically used in deployed systems that need to survive in difficult environments.

They currently employ four staff who have engineering or computer science backgrounds. “This allows us to communicate with our customers on a highly technical level. Our suppliers are world leading companies in their fields. They contract with us to represent their interests in Australia,” says Mr Breunig. “Typically, the nature of our products is such that we do not compete with Australian companies but with other local distributors representing other overseas companies.”

In their sixth year of operation, their staff has 10-15 years experience in the industry. The company’s main headquarters are located in Adelaide, but they also have a specialist support engineer in Sydney.

Dedicated Systems Australia Pty Ltd also works with OEMs that have similar requirements to Defence. These include:

  • computer systems in the transport industry that are exposed to shock & vibration
  • the communications industry which needs long product life cycles and high computer performance, often in small spaces
  • software security, and
  • commercial aviation.

Mr Breunig said, “Retaining and developing expertise is easier in SMEs, especially in small markets like Australia, where niche markets do not provide economies of scale for big companies. We will definitely remain a niche operator with a high level of technical expertise. We will grow in response to market requirements and add products and services for our customers in the Defence Industry.”
