Prime contractor: Thales Australia (formerly known as ADI Ltd)

The Guided Missile Frigates (FFGs) Upgrade project seeks to upgrade four (originally six) Adelaide class FFGs and ensure that they remain effective and supportable through to their end of life 2013-21. It will deliver upgraded and integrated combat systems, including sensors, missiles launchers and associated platforms systems, add an onboard training system to the ships’ combat system and improve the reliability of the ships’ platform systems.

HMAS Darwin commenced contractor sea trials in March 2008 and contractual provisional acceptance is scheduled for August 2008. The last FFG upgrade in HMAS Newcastle commenced in October 2007 and provisional acceptance is due in June 2009. HMA Ships Sydney and Melbourne are operating under Navy control, progressing towards initial operational release by the end of June 2008.

Electronic Surveillance and Underwater Warfare Systems performance shortcomings continue to be corrected under a contractor agreed remedial plan and trials program being processed during 2008-09. Underwater system is performance is being assessed.
