The current in-service tank transporters are not capable of transporting the additional weight of the M1A1 and M88A2 1, and the increased fuel consumption imposed by the M1A1 necessitates the supplementation of the current tactical fuel delivery system. The scope of LAND 907 provides for the procurement of systems to fill these capability gaps. These systems have been provided by Australian industry and will be primarily used for transport and fuelling of the M1A1/M88A2 vehicles within Australia.

1 Both vehicles weigh approx 63 000 kg compared to the Leopard weight of 42 000 kg.

Heavy Tank Transporter (HTT)

TOP

The scope of LAND 907 includes providing sufficient heavy-lift capability to move up to a tank squadron (14 tanks) concurrently. LAND 907 has procured 14 HTTs (truck and trailer) and associated repair and maintenance support.

The LAND 907 tank transporter capability is provided by 14 HTTs. A HTT is comprised of a MAN H76 41.530 8x8 prime mover, a Drake 4x8 expanding deck trailer and 2 x 8 expanding dolly converter. This solution was selected following an open tender, with contract signature achieved on 12 May 2005 with MAN Military Vehicle Systems Australia. The HTT is a civilian-based solution and uses a widely available and supportable commercial prime mover and trailer. Of particular note, the Drake trailer is widely used to transport heavy loads such as mining equipment across Australia. The first three HTTs were delivered 65 days ahead of schedule, with all deliveries completed two and a half months ahead of schedule in April 2007.

Truck Tanker Fuel – Aviation Specification

TOP

The LAND 907 tactical fuel truck capability is provided by eight truck tanker         fuel - aviation specification (TTF-AS). Supplying the LAND 907 TTF-AS involved rebuilding surplus Mack R-series chassis and fitting them with a new tank and pump assembly with Mack Trucks Australia as the prime contractor. The TTF-AS uses an existing design and an extant contract managed by Land Vehicle Systems Program Office. This resulted in very low levels of technical, schedule and cost risk. All eight TTF-AS have been delivered to 1st Brigade.
