Project Overview
LAND 40 comprises two phases:
- Phase 1 (approved) seeks to provide a medium range, direct fire guided weapon for attacking bunkers, buildings and armoured vehicles.
- Phase 2 (unapproved) seeks to provide a range of direct fire support weapons for use by an infantry battalion.

Phase 1 – Direct Fire Guided Weapon (DFGW)Phase 1 is to deliver the Javelin weapon system as the new DFGW capability. The Javelin will be issued to selected infantry units, cavalry and Special Forces units. The acquisition includes Command Launch Units (CLUs), training devices, logistic support and missiles.
The Javelin is a man-portable shoulder fired weapon system capable of engaging armoured targets, bunkers and buildings. The Javelin system consists of the CLU and the missile. Javelin uses a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance.
Current Status:
Source selection and recommendations are being finalised for Government consideration. Second pass approval is planned to occur during April 2009.

Phase 2 – Direct Fire Support Weapon (DFSW)This phase will provide the Australian Army with a range of direct fire support weapon systems that will be integral to an infantry battalion.
Project background and proposal information is available in the current published Defence Capability Plan.
Current Status:
Source selection and recommendations are being finalised for Government consideration. Second pass approval is planned to occur during April 2009.
