LAND 19 - Ground Based Air Defence Weapon Systems

Current Phases
Point of Contact

Project Overview

Project LAND 19 seeks to acquire a Very Low Level Air Defence Weapon System (VLLADWS) capability for Army. This multi-phased project has already been responsible for introducing the RBS 70 Weapon System, Clip On Night Device (COND), VLLADWS Alerting and Cueing System (VACS) and the Advanced Air Defence Simulator into operational service.

The remaining phases seek to introduce an enhanced Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) weapon system (Phase 6) and to enhance or replace the current Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) weapon system (Phase 7).

Current Phases

Phase 6 – SHORAD Weapon System
Phase 6 seeks to provide an enhanced RBS 70 ground based, short range, air defence weapon system for the Australian Defence Force through:

  • acquisition of additional SHORAD systems for 16th Air Defence Regiment, providing a full compliment to 111th Battery, and re-equipping 110th Battery; and
  • upgrade and life of type extension of the in-service RBS 70 weapons systems to 2015.

The equipment to be purchased includes the latest version of the RBS 70 weapon system, new RBS 70 night sights, new Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), extended range portable radars with integrated IFF, and a new tactical command and control system.

Current Status:
The prime contract for supply of the SHORAD systems was signed in May 2003 with Saab Systems Pty Ltd. Sub-contractors include Saab Bofors Dynamics (weapon systems), FLIR (night sight), Thales (RBS70 IFF) and Lockheed Martin (radar). All weapon systems have been delivered to the Commonwealth and the tactical command and control system has passed acceptance testing and is being introduced into service.

It may include new technologies and weapon systems that are also capable of countering rockets, artillery and mortars. Further details are provided in the current version of the Defence Capability Plan.
