How To Apply

Overview

The MEUS aims to assist you to:

  • Make the most of your studies at university
  • Become a professional graduate in your discipline; and
  • Gain an understanding of the relationship and co-dependencies that exist between the DMO and the three military services.

During the MEUS you will:

  • Commence and complete a 4 year engineering degree at the UNSW@ADFA (University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy)
  • Have access to a mentor in your engineering discipline from DMO’s professional engineers if you wish; and
  • Complete a mandatory 6-8 week paid work experience placement each year.

Work Experience

Each year you will be given a minimum of six weeks work experience during the summer holidays. You may work with other scholarship holders under the guidance of an experienced DMO professional.

As an engineer you will participate in a work experience program that is professionally recognised by Engineers Australia. You will work on real-world engineering problems related to the support of equipment in service with the Australian Defence Force. The DMO predominately does not do hands-on design or engineering work. These activities are mainly undertaken by companies contracted by the DMO; however there are some instances where the DMO will undertake hands-on design and engineering work.

The type of equipment you may be working with includes:

  • PC9/A aircraft
  • C130J Hercules transport aircraft
  • Patrol boats
  • Collins submarines; and
  • Armoured Personnel Carriers

Where will you be located?

Most work experience placements are located in capital cities including Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and regional locations like Royal Australian Air Force Base Williamtown (near Newcastle), Nowra in New South Wales, Oakey in Queensland, East Sale in Victoria or Rockingham in Western Australia.

Note: DMO may cover travel and accommodation costs associated with your work experience if the project is away from your normal residence. However, the norm will be to place you in a work placement in Canberra or your home location if you live within commuting distance of a suitable location.

After the MEUS

After successfully completing the MEUS, you will be encouraged to apply for the Materiel Graduate Scheme.

What do I need to do to be able to apply for the Materiel Graduate Scheme?

To be eligible to apply for the MGS you need to continue your studies through to graduation and achieve a credit average.
