MATERIEL GRADUATE SCHEME OVERVIEW
DMO is involved in many of the largest, most demanding and leading edge projects in Australia. With over 210 major and 150 minor projects, the variety of job opportunities is limitless. The DMO graduate and undergraduate programs provide you with the opportunity to use the skills you acquired at university, while building on your experiences. You will work with expert teams and a mentor to ensure you gain the most from the program. Your work will also contribute to nationally significant projects supporting the ADF that are complex and highly valued.
The 18-month graduate program consists of three work rotations incorporating both on and off the job learning and development including assistance to achieve industry based professional recognition. The DMO Institute, a virtual corporate university, offers learning and development opportunities from practitioner through to postgraduate level in all key DMO disciplines.

Engineers
As an engineer you will participate in a work experience program that is professionally recognised by Engineers Australia. You will work on real-world engineering problems related to the support of equipment in service with the Australian Defence Force. DMO predominately does not do hands on design or engineering work. These activities are mainly done by companies contracted by DMO, in some instances DMO will undertake hands on design and engineering work.
During your workplace rotations you may find yourself:
- Translating capability requirements into technical function and performance specifications for example the development of the Joint Strike Fighter technical specifications
- Providing engineering research reports on systems such as Global Positioning Systems
- Working as part of the engineering team for example the FA18 or F111 fighter aircraft
- Developing, maintaining and implement engineering management plans and procedures
- Acting as engineering authority to understand performance of equipment and systems and determine the safety of equipment for operation
- Managing the decommissioning and disposal of assets, for example, to sell to third parties or donate to museums or as dive wrecks
- Contributing to the development and management of environmental programs
- Managing and taking part in the technical evaluation of tenders for new equipment
- Negotiating and managing contracts for the delivery of the equipment (or capability)
Procurement and Contracting
- Providing legal advice on a variety of contractual matters
- Researching the legislative situation surrounding the operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within Australian domestic airspace
- Procuring Global Positioning Systems for Army and Navy aircraft
- Managing contracts and negotiating with consultants
- Preparing Statements of Work (SOWs) for procurement activities
- Reviewing contract progress reports
- Assisting with the evaluation of major tender documentation
Finanace/Accounting
- As an accountant in the DMO you can be involved in activities that cover the full spectrum of the accounting profession. For example:
- Work on the financial reform agenda
- Managing significant parts of the DMO's billion dollar budget
- Preparing project budgets
- Assist in the preparation of DMO monthly and annual financial statements
- Assisting in Defence/DMO financial remediation work for the ANAO
- Accrual and output managemen
- Review and undertake analysis of quarterly financial reports covering due diligence, accrual expenses job kits and future certificate of compliance requirements
- Assisting in the preparation of DMO's budget statements for consideration by Parliamentary committees
Logistics
As a DMO materiel logistician your role can be wide ranging and may include:
- managing a fleet of defence assets
- establishing the support infrastructure for new aircraft or warships
- ensuring that the broken components in a tracked vehicle such as the M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank are managed effectively to maximise the serviceability of the tank
Information Technology
As an In-Service Application Manager within the DMO, you will be using Logistics Systems that support the Australian Defence Organisation including areas of Operation overseas. You will be involved in activities which require in-depth investigation and rectification of IT application problems, using Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) including:
- Assist in the management and implementation of business information systems
- Provide technical advice on business systems
- Develop change control procedures
- Writing integration and acceptance test plans
- Develop detailed risk mitigation plans
The purpose of the work rotations is to:
- provide you with a broad understanding of different functions across the Defence Materiel Organisation
- introduce you to skills required to progress your career in DMO
- develop you as a key professional for DMO's future.
You will be able to allocate your preference from a range of rotation possibilities prior to allocation of each work rotation. Actual allocation is based on:
- your professional development needs
- organisational requirements
- your skills and experiences
- Your preference
We understand that the transition from study to career can be a difficult transition to undertake. In designing the MGS we aim to ease this transition by developing a series of support networks to help develop you into a professional member of our workforce.
As a graduate, you have access to all the support available to DMO staff. You will also be assigned a senior manager as a mentor and a buddy from the previous year's MGS intake to help you.
DMO is located at a number of sites around the country. You may undertake rotations in Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide. However some graduates may be assigned to regional locations like Williamtown (near Newcastle) and Nowra in NSW, Oakey in Queensland or Rockingham in Western Australia.
You may also be sent to another location for one or more of your work rotations. DMO will cover most of the costs associated with this temporary relocation.

- provide you with a broad understanding of different functions across the Defence Materiel Organisation;
- introduce you to skills required to progress your career in DMO; and
- develop you as a key professional for DMO's future.
You will be able to allocate your preference from a range of rotation possibilities prior to allocation of each work rotation. Actual allocation is based on:
- your professional development needs;
- Divisional business needs; and
- your skills and experiences.

WHAT WILL YOU DO AFTER THE MGS?
After the MGS, you will be assigned to a permanent position with your Home Division. This assignment will be based on corporate needs, your qualifications and your experiences during the MGS.
