Overview

The Materiel Undergraduate Scheme (MUS) aims to assist you to:

  • make the most of your final year/s at university

  • become a professional graduate in your discipline

  • become a valuable member of Defence Materiel Organisation’s (DMO) professional staff.

During the MUS you will:

  • continue your studies at your university

  • have access to a mentor in your discipline from DMO’s professional engineering, accounting, and logistics and staff if you wish.

  • complete a mandatory 6 week work experience placement each year, with additional work experience placements available if you wish (for example mid year placements or one day a week placements).

Work Experience

Each year you will be given a minimum of six weeks work experience during the summer holidays in a work area specific to your degree. You may work with other cadets in similar disciplines under the guidance of an experienced DMO professional.

Engineering:

As an engineer you will participate in a work experience program that is professionally recognised by Engineers Australia. You will work on real-world engineering problems related to the support of equipment in service with the Australian Defence Force. DMO predominately does not do hands on design or engineering work. These activities are mainly done by companies contracted by DMO, but there are occasions where DMO is involved with these aspects of engineering work.

The type of equipment you may be working with includes:

Accounting:

As an accountant in the DMO you can be involved in activities that cover the full spectrum of the accounting profession. For example you might work on the financial reform agenda in one of the largest organisations in Australia or be involved in the financial management of complex billion dollar projects. We need people who specialise at the corporate level in areas of:

  • financial and accounting policy development;
  • financial statements preparation;
  • asset accounting;
  • costing;
  • budgeting;
  • financial analysis;
  • management reporting;
  • financial investigation; and
  • financial information systems

Logistics:

As a DMO materiel logistician your role can be wide ranging and may include:

  • managing a fleet of defence assets;
  • establishing the support infrastructure for new aircraft or warships; or
  • ensuring that the broken components in a tracked vehicle such as the M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank are managed effectively to maximise the serviceability of the tank

These roles range from decisions about spares, to training needs, to what new warehouse and hanger facilities are needed.

Note:If your degree requires a full year’s work experience DMO will make other arrangements for you or if you would like to work more hours DMO will also accommodate you. Contact us for further information. e-mailMUS Management Team

Where will you be located?

Most work experience placements are located in capital cities including Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and regional locations like Royal Australian Air Force Base Williamtown (near Newcastle), Nowra in NSW, Oakey in Queensland, East Sale in Victoria or Rockingham in Western Australia. Not only will you get valuable professional experience, but you might also be able to experience life in another part of Australia at our expense.

Notes:

  • DMO will cover any travel and accommodation costs associated with your work experience if the project is away from your normal residence.

  • DMO will provide other support for cadets participating in full year work experience programs that require relocation. Please contact us by email for further information: e-mail MUS Management Team

After the Materiel Undergraduate Scheme

After successfully completing the MUS and obtaining your degree, you will be given the opportunity to transition to the Materiel Graduate Scheme (MGS).
