ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY

Conditions of Engagement

To be eligible to work in DMO, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen;

  • Provide specified documents to prove identity;

  • Must not be within the exclusion period (or ‘redundancy benefit period’); from receiving a redundancy benefit from an Australian Public Service (APS) agency. Please refer to the link for additional information about the exclusion period (www.apsc.gov.au/publications/directionsamendment20091.doc.)

  • Satisfy character and relevant security checks; and

  • Meet the health standards for engagement.

Australian Citizenship

Like a number of other countries, the Australian Government considers that Government employees must be Australian citizens as a demonstration of their commitment to, and long-term stake in, the future of Australia.

It is therefore a requirement that, in order to be engaged as an Australian Public Servant, you are an Australian Citizen, unless the Agency Head has reason to waive this requirement (Public Service Act 1999 – section 22(8)). A waiver of this requirement would only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

In Defence, the citizenship requirement for a security clearance takes precedence over the engagement requirement. This aspect of the security requirement makes the employment of persons who are not Australian citizens, in most instances, impracticable. To see if you meet our requirements click here.

For information about Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement to the APS, please click here for more information.

General information on Australian citizenship may be obtained from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Proof of Identity

Defence requires all successful applicants to provide sufficient information providing proof of identity before they commence in the Department. For a list of acceptable forms of identification, please see the information provided in the Proof of Identity form.

Prior receipt of Redundancy Benefit

If you have received a redundancy benefit from an Australian Public Service (APS) agency within the exclusion period (or ‘redundancy benefit period’) of the proposed date of engagement, the Department can only offer you employment with the prior approval of both the APS Commissioner and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and associated Delegates.

SECURITY

All vacancies in the DMO are subject to a security assessment. Please be aware that all jobs in Defence require some level of security clearance, and to be eligible for such a clearance, you must be an Australian citizen. Depending on the level of security required for an advertised position, applicants must have a checkable background for the previous 5 years, while for Secret and Top Secret levels of clearance, applicants must have a checkable background for the past ten years.

HEALTH STANDARDS

If you are new to the Public Service, you will be required to undergo a health clearance, which will be conducted by an appropriate Health for Industry (HFI) officer or a HFI approved representative. The medical examination is required to ascertain your medical fitness for engagement to the APS and the type of work that you will be engaged in.

EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT

Employment in DMO is under the Public Service Act 1999, which provides for both (ongoing) permanent and (temporary) fixed-term employment. The applicant information pack will detail the terms of the employment opportunity.

Terms and conditions of employment for DMO staff are set by the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement (DECA) 2009. This can be accessed from the Defence internet site www.defence.gov.au

In addressing the selection criteria, you should outline your relevant skills and abilities and cite key examples of your work performance, qualifications and other relevant experience.

Specific areas that selection panels consider in the short listing of applications include:
