Project Air 5376 – F/A-18 Hornet Upgrade

Project Home | Phases 1 & 2.1 | Phase 2 | Phase 3 | Ground Support |

JP 2089 Phase 2 Variable Message Format

The scope of Phase 2 includes incorporation of Link-16 and Variable Message Format (VMF) communications capabilities to F/A-18A/B, ANZAC class guided missile frigates and various Tactical Information Exchange Domain infrastructure elements. As Link 16 for F/A-18A/B has already been incorporated by Hornet Upgrade under Phase 2.2, the F/A-18 focus for JP 2089 is on incorporation of a VMF capability.

The capability requirement for F/A-18A/B VMF is to provide a more effective Close Air Support (CAS) capability by employing VMF communications when operating in conjunction with Joint Terminal Attack Controllers. VMF will enable automated data link exchange utilising line-of-sight (LOS) radio communications. The performance of CAS missions will be enhanced by:

a.         a significant reduction in the potential for fratricide,
b.         removal of many opportunities for data translation and transcription errors,
c.         enabling target identification in a more timely and precise manner,
d.         decreasing pilot workload,
e.         increasing air and ground situational awareness, and
g.         increasing the probability of aircraft survival.

Year of Decision is 2009

DMO Electronic Systems Division is responsible for provision of a VMF capability across the ADF. As the responsible organisation for acquisition and sustainment of the F/A-18A/B platform, DMO Aerospace Systems Division (through the Tactical Fighter Systems Program Office and Hornet Upgrade) provides support to JP 2089.

JP 5408 Global Positioning System Protection

JP5408 will deliver a Global Positioning System (GPS) self-protection capability for the F/A-18A/B and a number of other ADF air, land and sea platforms. This will enhance the ADF’s ability to protect platforms from GPS electronic attack.
