Introduction

In July of 2000 as a result of a report completed by KPMG for the Minister for Defence at the time, the Hon John Moore, the Defence Acquisition Organisation (DAO) and the Support Command Australia (SCA) formally merged to form the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO). For the Tactical Fighter Group this bought about the merger of the Tactical Fighter Project Office and the Logistic support elements at RAAF Base Williamtown which is now known as the Tactical Fighter Systems Program Office (TFSPO).

aircraftTFSPO provide support and upgrading of Australia's front line tactical fast jet fleet of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft and Hawk 127 Lead-In Fighter aircraft. As of January 2002 the TFSPO have staff located in Williamtown, Russell Offices Canberra, Boeing St Louis Missouri, Naval Air Station China Lake in California, Virginia, Norris Naval Base North Island and Brough in East Yorkshire. The F/A-18 Hornet Upgrade is managed by the Tactical Fighter Project Management Unit within TFSPO.

Project Air 5376 was established to manage the upgrade of the RAAF F/A-18 fleet to incorporate enhancements that will allow the aircraft to more effectively perform its air defence tasks. The project is being conducted in three main phases. Phase 1 has already been delivered and elements of Phases 2 and 3 currently in production.
