Air 5276 Phase 3 - AP-3C Advanced Flight Simulator

Contact

Background

Air 5276 Phase 3 is an approved project to provide an Advanced Flight Simulator (AFS) that fully replicates the in-service AP-3C for training purposes. The project seeks to provide:

  •   an advanced flight simulator which is capable of simulating:

    •  hazardous and fatiguing sequences;

    •  training sequences that cannot be adequately or safely conducted in flight, including aircraft emergencies;

    •  tactical/mission training sequences;

    •  weapon release sequences; and

    •  any other training sequence where a high fidelity flight simulator is identified as a more resource effective training solution for normal flight training operations;

  •  a high fidelity wide screen, 200 degree horizontal field of view display capable of projecting the required pilots’ view in tactical situations; and

  •  a capability to link, in the future, to other simulators through Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) software protocols.

Current Situation

TOP

A contract was established with Thales Training & Simulation Pty Limited (TTSP) for supply of the AFS. Stage 1 of the project was completed in January 2003 and Stage 2 in June 2004. This allowed some training activities to be transferred from the aircraft to the simulator. Due to the unique operational requirements and aerodynamic characteristics of the AP-3C the simulator has required a prolonged period of adjustment and tuning to bring it to a level of fidelity to allow all training activities to be completely transferred to the simulator. Full training capability of the AP-3C AFS is expected by November 2009.
