JP 2048 Phase 3 - Amphibious Watercraft Replacement
Project Overview
JP2048 Phase 3 – Amphibious Watercraft Replacement Project is seeking to acquire a new watercraft amphibious capability that will interface and interoperate with the LHD vessels currently being acquired by the Commonwealth from Tenix Defence Pty Limited (Tenix).
Tenix is contracted to design, build and deliver 2 x 27,000 tonne Navantia S.A designed Burgue de Provección Estratégica LHDs.
The LHDs will be known in the RAN as the CANBERRA Class i.e. HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide.
The LHDs will replace the amphibious capability inherent in the current range of ADF amphibious platforms, these being the Heavy Landing Ship HMAS TOBRUK and one of the Amphibious Transport ships, HMAS MANOORA or HMAS KANIMBLA. The new watercraft amphibious capability will need to be able to transport personnel and equipment from large amphibious ships to shore without utilising fixed port facilities or prepared landing facilities.
Amphibious Watercraft Replacement (JP2048 Phase 3) is scheduled to achieve 1st Pass in February 2009, 2nd Pass in October 2010 and an ISD of 2012 - 2014.
