NEW Resources for SMMs
SHOME Tool

AMIP has reviewed a software package that was developed by a contractor on behalf of the UK Civil Aviation Authority. In conjunction with the associated questionnaires, the software package provides a tool that is capable of being consistently applied by different units, with sufficient sensitivity, so that over time it can measure improvements (or otherwise) generated by the introduction of human factors and safety management programs. A review of the SHOME Tool is attached.

If you would like to commence using SHOME within your unit or company, please contact the AMIP team so that we can send you a copy of the software and the user manual.

Human Factors and Maintenance Error Management Texts

Most SMMs and WOEs should have received the Human Factors books from AMIP. Below is a list of other texts that have been reviewed by AMIP which may be of interest to SMMs. Contact us for ordering details or if you’re interested in the texts but do not have sufficient unit funds at your disposal.

Decision Making Under Stress Flin, Salas, Strub and Martin. Decision Making Under Stress presents a state of the art review of psychological theory in research and practise on decision making in high pressure and emergency situations.
How Safe is Safe Enough? Greg Alston. Covering leadership, safety programs and risk management for organisations and individuals, this book helps in professional development, grooming current and future leaders to understand their roles in safety and risk management.
A Human Error Approach to Aviation Accident Analysis Weigmann and Shappell. Appropriate for all levels of expertise, this book provides the knowledge and tools required to conduct a human error analysis of accidents, regardless of operational setting.
Applied Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance Patankar and Taylor. Written as an accompaniment to Risk Management and Error Reduction in Aviation Maintenance, this second text places particular emphasis on applying human factors principles in a book intended as a practical guide as well as an academic text.
