2010 ADF Software Symposium

The 2010 ADF Software Symposium is sponsored by Systems Certification and Integrity (SCI) section of Directorate General of Technical Airworthiness (DGTA-ADF). The Symposium was held on 17-18 August 2010 at RAAF Williams - Laverton. The theme of the symposium is:

"Achieving Aviation Software Safety Goals in a Schedule Driven Environment."

The symposium is aimed at Commonwealth and industry engineers and managers engaged in the development, acquisition or in-service management of aviation software for the ADF. The symposium is designed to provide a forum to present, discuss and educate on current issues relating to the development, acquisition and in-service management of aviation software within the ADF. In particular, the symposium will focus on the competing interests of safety and capability, cost and schedule considerations in an environment of intense cost and schedule scrutiny and the SRP. Although aviation software is the main focus of the symposium, we extend our invitation to the land and sea branches of the ADF. Many of the concepts that will be considered during the symposium will be of common interest to all branches. The ADF Software Symposium offers a great opportunity for networking within the ADF and industry software community and to discuss relevant software issues within Defence.

2009 ADF Software Symposium

The 2009 ADF Software Symposium is sponsored by Systems Certification and Integrity (SCI) section of Directorate General of Technical Airworthiness (DGTA-ADF). The Symposium was held on 18-19 August 2009 at RAAF Williams - Laverton. The theme of the symposium is:

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to Software Design Acceptance"

Aviation acquisition and modification projects routinely involve technologies incorporating software, including flight instruments, flight controls, navigation systems, communication systems, mission systems, health and usage monitoring systems, etc. Therefore, the Commonwealth acceptance of these systems should routinely involve assessments of the software in these systems against relevant airworthiness requirements – termed software design acceptance. Historically, this has been a challenging activity for many Project Offices (POs) and System Program Offices (SPOs).

The ADF procures and manages these systems via a broad range of acquisition and support strategies. The strategies range from the purchase of entire aircraft via foreign military sales or commercial contract, the modification of existing ADF platforms via foreign military sales purchase of an entire modification, purchase of aircraft equipment for integration by a commercial 3rd party, or commercial contract, through to the ADF modification of software systems. For some of these projects, the ADF may elect to oversee the design activity directly. Alternatively, the ADF may choose to involve a foreign National Airworthiness Authority such as the US Air Force, US Navy or Federal Aviation Administration, for example, to oversee elements of the activity on the ADF’s behalf.

While the principles underlying software design acceptance remains consistent, these broad range of purchase strategies and associated factors present varying challenges for software design acceptance. Thus, the aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for educating and discussing the principles of software design acceptance, and for contrasting these principles with numerous examples derived from current ADF acquisitions and modifications from major projects through the minor SPO related modification.

2008 ADF Software Symposium

"Software Support Agencies – Assuring the Continuing Dependability of Software"

The Symposium is aimed at Commonwealth and industry engineers and aims to provide a forum to present, discuss and educate attendees on current issues relating to acquisition and in-service management of airborne software within the ADF. Although the aviation related software issues are the main focus of the Symposium, many concepts addressed during the Symposium are also of common interest to the land and sea branches of the ADF. The ADF Software Symposium offers great opportunity for networking within the ADF and related industry as well as international software community and to discuss relevant software issues within defence.
