Australian and Japanese Ministers meet
22 February 2010

Senator The Hon. John Faulkner

A meeting between the Japanese Foreign Minister and the Australian Minister for Defence highlighted the strength of the defence relationship between the two countries.

Senator Faulkner and Minister Okada’s meeting discussed opportunities for cooperation, including the development of an Acquisition and Cross-servicing Agreement, which will facilitate logistics cooperation between the Australian Defence Force and the Japanese Self-Defence Force.

Senator Faulkner said that the agreement, which was announced during Prime Minister Rudd’s visit to Japan in December last year, will allow Australia and Japan to better coordinate their cooperation in a range of areas, including disaster relief and peacekeeping.

Minister Okada visited Australia on 20 and 21 February 2010, the first visit by a Minister of the Hatoyama Government since its election in September 2009.
