Defending Australia and its National Interests

Cover story

Education and training at the Australian Defence College

Is training more important than education? Both are important. Excellence in the basics - 'doing the basics brilliantly' - is the foundation of the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) professionalism. Training is based on highly specified requirements, things we are certain of. We train for certainty, but we educate for uncertainty. Today, the character and range of operations and demands placed upon the ADF is broad and fast changing. The early stages of a Service career are characterised by an emphasis on training. As a career progresses the emphasis changes towards education.
