A united front with a vision for the future: the Senior Leadership Group meets in Canberra

The recent meeting of Defence’s Senior Leadership Group (SLG) at Parliament House in Canberra focussed on priorities for 2007-08, including a range of initiatives to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Senior Defence Leaders welcomed the opportunity to hear from the Prime Minister, the Defence Minister, Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).

Major Defence priorities for 2007-08

In launching their joint vision for Defence at the recent Senior Leadership Group (SLG) meeting at Parliament House, the Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force (CDF) highlighted that the future success of Defence depends on combining the unique skills of our military and civilian workforces.

Moving forward on Defence Reform

In April this year, the Minister for Defence released the Defence Management Review (DMR). At the Senior Leadership Group meeting in May, the Secretary announced that Mr Mike Pezzullo will lead a new policy and coordination function, which is an important next step in implementing Defence’s reform agenda.

Budget outcome hits the mark for Defence

For the seventh year in a row the Government has upheld its commitment to Defence White Paper funding, with the Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello MP, recently announcing an additional $14 billion in new budget measures over the next 10 years for Defence.

Fond farewell to a financial institution

One area that sees the budget process from inception to decision is Budget and Financial Planning (BFP) Division.First Assistant Secretary BFP Mr George Veitch who has headed this area for the past five years, and is soon to retire.
