Coordination and Public AffairsBasic health assessments for civilian employeesUnderstanding the value of people, in 2006, the Coordination and Public Affairs Division (CPA) of the Australian Defence Headquarters (ADHQ) provided a Basic Health Assessment – Early Detection Program for civilian employees as part of the Division’s Health and Wellbeing pilot program. The objective of the program was to provide individuals with a quick guide to their current health and to obtain a general understanding of the current health status of the CPA workforce overall. This was achieved through the measurement of several physiological factors and a review of the employee’s current lifestyle. The basic health assessment included blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose level tests. A report was provided to each participant showing their test results along with the normal ranges for each test. Referrals and more specific advice were provided where required. A report summarising the overall outcomes was also prepared for the manager of the program. Ninety-three employees participated in the program and feedback indicated that it was well received and beneficial. The table below outlines the feedback received. As a result it is intended to expand the program in 2007 to include other interested personnel in ADHQ. We would also encourage other Groups within Defence to consider the assessments as part of their approach to health and wellbeing. As part of the ongoing program, CPA Health and Wellbeing staff are being offered the chance to join the hugely successful 10,000 Steps Walking program. This program caters for staff of all ages and fitness levels. Each participant will receive a step log book, access to the 10,000 steps website, as well as the use of pedometer for the length of the program.
