Another key milestone has been achieved in the reforms to the business of clothing and personal equipment for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), with the release of a long-term procurement plan.

The Minister for Defence, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson MP, released the ADF Clothing and Personal Equipment Procurement Plan 2007- 2011 on 27 October.

The release of the plan was foreshadowed in the recommendations of an independent review, chaired by Mr Mike Harding, which was completed in July and featured in the August edition of Defence. The DMO is implementing all 29 recommendations of the review.

The plan provides details of proposed purchasing of a value over $300 million, which will be considered by Defence and the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) over the next five years.

According to Dr Nelson, the ADF Clothing and Personal Equipment Procurement Plan is significant for not only informing industry of Defence's intentions into the future but providing industry with the opportunity to provide the latest and best available clothing and personal equipment to ADF personnel.

"Importantly, the plan is consistent with the Kinnaird reforms that are relevant not just for capital acquisition but also for the sustainment of Defence materiel," the Minister said.

"The Plan will be updated every June as the Clothing and Personal Equipment requirements of our ADF personnel are reviewed. The ADF Clothing and Procurement Plan retains flexibility to manage unforeseeable requirements for the ADF through operational deployments and technological development."

The plan complements other DMO activities to keep industry informed of issues and developments. The next edition of the quarterly newsletter, 'Threads', will be released shortly and the next Defence Clothing Industry Forum is scheduled for 27 February 2007. Future editions of the ADF Clothing and Personal Equipment Plan will be released at the Defence and Industry conference each year.
