The Secretary's vision is for Defence to be recognised by Government as highly competent, professional and business like financial managers within the next five years. A suite of innovative new training courses has been developed by Financial Training Branch to assist the Defence people to meet the Secretary's aim.

Senior Officer Training Induction Training

The two day Senior Leadership Group Financial Management Course for SES and Star ranked officers provides a high level view of the key financial management issues facing Defence.

The Senior Officer Financial Management Awareness Course is aimed at the Executive Level 2/O-6 level officer and provides staff with a high level view of the key financial management issues facing Defence and an overview of whole-of-Defence budget planning and management.

The Senior Officer Financial Management Course is targeted at APS Level 6/O-4 level to Executive Level 1-2/O-5, O-6 level officers. The course examines the financial environment in which Defence operates and includes an introduction to accrual accounting concepts and basic budget development and reporting.

  • 8-10 May 06 (Melbourne)

The Managing and Building Defence Budget Course uses syndicate and scenario exercises to take participants through the development of a Defence Management and Financial Plan (DMFP) including costing new policy proposals, prioritising competing proposals and constructing a balanced DMFP.

The roll out of the brand new finance induction training program began in March. The courses include Introduction to Financial Management in Defence (IFM), Introduction to Accounting in Defence (IAD) and Introduction to Asset Management in Defence (IAM). Participants are actively involved through the use of Defence-based scenarios and exercise activities, and the sharing of Defence experiences.
