On Monday the 15 August 2005 HMAS Anzac returned home to Fleet Base West at Garden Island after being away for over 6 months during Exercise Northern Trident. Friends and family of the crew were on hand to welcome all of the ship's company in.

  • The 7th Australian Explosive Ordnance Symposium (PARARI) will be held 8-10 November in Melbourne. The symposium is jointly hosted by the Department of Defence's Directorate of Ordnance Safety and ADI Limited and will attract delegates from over 13 nations. Delegates will be able to interact with defence related industries, regulators and users, and get the latest on what's happening on the EO scene. The symposium covers a huge range of topics including technologies and new projects, insensitive munitions design and testing, explosives design and use, testing, risk assessment, unexploded ordnance disposal and management, blast and quantity distance, improvised explosive devices, explosives safety and EO management and policy development.   • The next Results through People (RtP) Network Ideas Summit will be held 15-16 September in Brisbane. The aim of the RtP Network is to provide a friendly, informal and trusting forum outside the normal work environment for members to consider ideas for improving or changing the way we achieve Defence's broader outcomes. Topics will include 'Occupational Health and Safety Issues in the Workplace', Defence Values, Leadership and Change and guest speakers include the Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston.   • Senior leaders wishing to attend the Strategic Outlook Seminar, to be held 7-8 November in Canberra, need to forward nominations to the contact officer by 9 September. The seminar is an initiative of Strategy Group to provide senior leaders an insight into the Defence Update 2005, and the major strategic policies and processes within Defence. Nominations are welcome from members throughout Australia, however, nominees outside the Australian Capital Territory will need to fund travel, accommodation and incidental expenses. The Seminar will be limited to 30 attendees, and whilst preference will be given to those who nominate early, Strategy Group reserves the right to balance participation. 18 August

Senior Australian business leader Mark Johnson has been appointed Chairman of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI). Mr Johnson is currently Deputy Chairman and one of the founders of successful global banking company Macquarie Bank as well as Chairman of the Australian Gaslight Company.

Senator Hill said Mr Johnson has had a distinguished career in banking and senior levels of business in Australia, serving as one of the Prime Minister's three business representative on the Business Advisory Council for APEC.

"The appointment of Mr Johnson reflects the Government desire to meet that charter and extend the geographical influence of ASPI. With business and the economy critical components of the strategic debate, it is also intended to further encourage a wider business participation," Senator Hill said.

16 August

The Federal Government has chosen Gibbs & Cox as the preferred designer for Navy's Air Warfare Destroyers (AWDs) - one of Australia's largest and most complex Defence projects worth up to $6 billion.

"The selection of Gibbs and Cox as platform designer now completes the team whose responsibility it is to deliver the project," Senator Hill said

Senator Hill said the Defence program office would now advise on a location to establish a state of the art AWD System Centre, which will house up to 200 personnel working on the development and through life support of the vessels.

Australia and the United States have joined forces in the development of leading edge technology by signing a joint agreement to further develop Australian active phased array radar technology.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said both countries will share the development costs, technical expertise and benefits of the active phased array radar technology which is being developed by ACT electronics company CEA Technologies. Senator Hill said phased array radar technology has enormous potential to manage high threat environments. The total development cost is estimated to be approximately $30 million over three years.

"I congratulate CEA Technologies for their ongoing support of this project and thank the Defence Materiel Organisation for the work done to bring about this joint project," Senator Hill said.

11 August

A weapon released from a United States Marine Corps (USMC) F/A-18 Hornet struck the ground in close proximity to a control building on the Delamere Air Weapons Range in the Northern Territory last night. Emergency procedures were activated and no personnel were injured during the incident.

A full investigation will be conducted by the RAAF Directorate of Flying Safety in consultation with the USMC and relevant external agencies.All bombing operations on the range have ceased and will not resume until appropriate investigations are complete.

9 August

Approximately 20 RAAF members from Air Combat Group and six Air Force Battle of Milne Bay veterans attended a commemoration service in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, to honour their fallen comrades.

The Governor for Milne Bay, other local officials and members of the community from the Milne Bay Province also attended the service held at Gurney Airport. The service included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and a fly past by an Air Combat Group F-111 strike aircraft from No. 6 Squadron.

"The service in Milne Bay is part of the national services that will be held this week to commemorate the end of World War II and the Victory in the Pacific. The service is in honour of those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country," the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd AM said.
