Results through PeopleLearning to lead the waySteve Newton looks at the Results through People Network and the benefits offered to members.

Over the past couple of months the Results through People (RtP) articles have presented the human face of the RtP network. In this issue, we will look at the direction for the coming year. By way of background, let's start with where it all began. The three-day RtP workshop is a key element of the renewal agenda launched in Defence in 2000. The inspiration for the RtP network, managed by the Coordination Governance and Renewal (CGR) Branch, came from a desire of a number of workshop participants to continue to pursue the RtP philosophy. The RtP network encourages building relationship skills and the practical application of behaviours that support productive working relationships. The RtP Ideas Summit, to be held in March, will provide an opportunity for members to learn from the experience and knowledge of others. As a part of the process of cultural renewal, the network has evolved into much more than one-on-one meetings, conversations and small group (chapter) discussions. The network will continue to grow, by branching out into workgroups, using open discussion forums and presentations (such as the monthly R1 theatrette presentations) to help broadcast the RtP message throughout Defence. An increasing demand for RtP support and the spread of the RtP network across Australia has prompted new directions for the network. CGR has planned a series of activities for 2005 and enhancements to the RtP network. These were developed from feedback and discussions with network members over the past twelve months to enable us to schedule activities to promote a set of behaviours which will help our people produce better results. The promotion of these behaviours as tools will be the primary focus of RtP. The program will integrate a variety of components to improve the key behaviours. These are:
The RtP network will continue to establish new chapters and build existing chapters across Defence. In 2005, new activities will be introduced to select and train chapter leaders. The new leaders will initially participate in a one-day workshop to establish networks with other leaders across Australia and improve their understanding of Defence management topics. Enhancements to the RtP program will give existing chapters the opportunity to keep doing the things that work for them or align with the new structure. In response to requests for additional activities that focus on managing and achieving results, CGR has introduced a one-day Improvement through Personal Effectiveness workshop. This workshop complements the three-day RtP workshop and will be conducted four to six weeks after the RtP workshop as a recall day for RtP workshop participants. The workshop will also be available to all Defence personnel, whether or not they have attended a three-day RtP workshop, on alternate dates. The Improvement through Personal Effectiveness workshop focuses on individual behaviours in a Defence context. Through this workshop, participants will be introduced to the concept of emotional intelligence to increase personal involvement, achieve results and give insight into their area of expertise. It will address how to become more accountable for personal actions in an evolving Defence/Government environment. A panel of supporting specialist providers will supplement Defence Renewal resources already in place. Defence Renewal manages a standing offer for these external providers to "contribute to the expansion of Results through People principles across the whole of Defence".
