The Billboard Newsletter

Williamtown is located within the surrounding areas of Port Stephens, Newcastle, and the Hunter Valley. Being such a wide spread area it has been difficult to communicate with other Defence families. As a result, Buddies in the Burbs has been established in the following areas Ashtonfield/Thornton, Medowie, and Nelson Bay.

As a result of the Ashtonfield/Thornton Buddies group, this encouraged the formation of Williamtown Newsletter Group who subsequently established a quarterly newsletter which is now known as The Billboard.

The aim of The Billboard is to provide information to the Williamtown Defence community to help new and established families assimilate into the Hunter and Port Stephens area. The response from the first two editions has been very encouraging. The Williamtown Newsletter Group is going from strength to strength and will continue to produce its newsletter but will always need feedback from Defence families to keep it interesting and informative.

The members of the Williamtown Newsletter Group have no formal qualifications in writing, editing, printing and distributing of publications but instead are a group of Defence spouses wanting to connect with others and make a difference.

We would love to hear from anyone in the Williamtown area who would like to participate in the production of The Billboard. We can be contacted through the below addresses or phone numbers.

North Australia Area Family Support Committee Inc

NAAFSC Inc is a not for profit Defence community group, located in Darwin, NT. The committee manage Coonawarra Community House located on Defence Establishment Berrimah, and Kids Force Kindergarten & Occasional Care located on the RAAF Base.

    Above: Kidsforce Facility

The community group has undergone a huge increase in membership from 75 in 03/04 to current membership of over 470. This is largely credited to the committee’s new strategy to survey Defence families and provide programs suitable to their needs. These programs have been implemented and managed by our Coordinator Belinda Couch. Also a Big Thank you to CSI NTK for the facility upgrade that has improved the centre and also has played a big part in the increase of our membership.

The NAAFSC Inc does not solely rely on the Family Support Funding Program, we have also applied for many grants over 04/05 where we received over $80,000,000 from Defence, NT Government, and the Early Childhood Association and Community Benefit Fund. As you can see, there are many opportunities for community groups to find funding outside of the FSFP.

Funding provided by Defence Community Organisation from the FSFP largely covers the NAAFSC operational budget. The NAAFSC does not make a profit from fees collected, but allows our more successful activities to subsides others to keep costs low and cover the expenses of programs overall. We believe a programs success and longevity relies heavily on programs being self funding and at an affordable price for families.

NAAFSC Activities: Activities are a great way for spouses, parents and children to meet others and with family usually so far away builds a great support network and for children helps them settle into their new environment.

    The Top Ender Magazine

The Top Ender is a professional publication put together for all Defence families in Darwin. It is used to keep families informed in many different areas including groups such as the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) and the different community groups on the four bases. There are stories written about things people have done in Darwin and to let others know what is on at various times of the year. As those that have spent time in the top end know, we have two seasons, wet and dry, so what activities are on depends greatly on what time of year it is.

The Top Ender is run mainly by voluntary staff. We are a Bi-monthly publication and have a committee of volunteers as well as the occasional volunteer. We also have two paid positions, our desktop publisher and our administrative assistant. We rely mainly on funding each year but subsidise that with money from advertisers.

Many families rely on the Top Ender for all types of information, for example sporting clubs for their kids or themselves, hairdressers or the local Avon lady. As many of you know moving to a new place, one of the biggest challenges is finding out where some of these places are. That’s why the Top Ender plays an integral role in living in the top end.

The Top Ender is always on the lookout for stories, or pictures and even classifieds. There is something in there for all ages. We try to cater for the kids, there are recipes for those that love to cook and even things for the big boys. At different times of the year we include special information such as cyclone season or tax time.

In the end the Top Ender is there for the families, making their time in the top end that much nicer.

    Submarine Community Group

The Submarine Community Group (Inc) (SCG) was formed in April 2004. It is a growing network of spouses and friends of naval personnel, both surface, submarine or shore based. The aim is to get our community working together and support each other in friendship, childcare, interest groups and simple gatherings when our spouses are away or when new people arrive in the west.

By coming together as a registered self help organisation we are in a better position to communicate with each other, engage with retired servicemen and women’s organisations, such as the Naval Association and Submarine Association, and provide a valuable point of contact for the assistance organisations. The SCG actively promotes inter-service friendships by joining with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) Ladies Auxiliary at Campbell Barracks for wine tasting evenings and fashion parades. Likewise they have joined us for “Sundowners” at the Maritime Museum and restaurant nights around the local area. Our group offers a variety of get togethers during business hours and after hours, to enable all members or their families to take advantage of events planned. Such events include restaurant evenings, craft nights, mums and bubs movie days and the Submarine Squadron’s Xmas party.

The Submarine Community Group (Inc) is an inclusive organisation of all spouses/ partners and all ranks and occupations in the WA RAN. Full membership is available to all serving or retired Naval personnel in WA and their spouses or partners. Associate membership is available to all other WA Defence Force personnel, NOK, retired Defence Force personnel and others upon application. We are a non-profit organisation, registered with the Department of Consumer Protection and Environment and operate under the umbrella of a Constitution.

We currently print a monthly newsletter that provides information regarding all upcoming events and helpful hints and is available to all SCG members

For additional information about the group, please see page 25 of the Winter 2005 edition of defence FAMILY MATTERS, which can be found here.
