On 7 March 2012, the Minister for Defence, Secretary of Defence and the Chief of the Defence Force jointly announced the response to reviews into aspects of Defence and Australia Defence Force Culture.

Background

On 11 April 2011 the Minister for Defence announced a series of reviews into aspects of Defence and ADF culture, summarised here.

The Minister also announced additional reviews:

The reviews have now been completed, with the exception of Phase 2 - Review into the Treatment of Women in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) which is being conducted by the Sex Discrimination Commissioner Ms Elizabeth Broderick.

In response to the reviews into aspects of Defence and Australia Defence Force Culture, Defence has developed a strategy for cultural change and reinforcement titled, Pathway to Change: Evolving Defence Culture.

In parallel with these reviews, an external law firm was engaged to review allegations of sexual and other forms of abuse in the Defence organisation. More information on this can be found here.
