Led by the Chief Information Officer, the Chief Information Officer Group's divisions and program areas work collectively to deliver a dependable, secure and integrated information environment to support Defence business and military operations.
The CIOG consists of four areas:
- the Chief Technology Officer Division ;
- the Information and Communications Technology Development Division ;
- the Information and Communications Technology Operations Division ; and,
- the Chief Operating Branch.
The Chief Technology Officer Division (CTOD) is responsible for the Defence ICT architecture and delivering ICT systems and applications in line with Defence's corporate goals and strategies. The CTO also provides guidance and support to defence on projects of strategic significance, promoting technology awareness and competence throughout the organisation and ensuring applications are built and integrated in line with CIOG's architecture for applications, Infrastructure and information.
- Enterprise Architecture Branch (EAB) is responsible for the overall architecture and design of the Defence Information Infrastructure (DII), including management of new DII capability requirements.

- Infrastructure Architecture Branch (IAB) is accountable for the strategic directions for ICT infrastructure architecture and related technologies within the DIE. The branch will develop strategies across all key infrastructure technology groups and will be the sole technical authority for all ICT infrastructure systems.

ICT Strategy & Planning Branch (ICTSPB) provides strategic advice on current and future information capabilities for inclusion within broader Defence planning processes and ensures Defence planning guidance is cascaded into subordinate planning processes within the Chief Information Officer Group; and manages whole-of-government information and communications technology issues, ensuring that Chief Information Officer planning and policies can incorporate, and is responsive to, legislative changes and other emerging Information Communication Technology (ICT) issues that are considered through Commonwealth ICT governance processes.

The Information and Communications Technology Development Division (ICTDD) is responsible for the architectural design, development and third level support of the Defence Information Environment. ICTDD delivers to internal and external customer requirements through program and project management.
- Enterprise Solutions Branch (ESB) works with customers to analyse and define their ICT requirements and scope solutions that enable their business.

- Personnel Systems Branch (PSB) implements and supports the enterprise resource planning software applications on behalf of Defence's Enterprise Process Owners. The Branch provides applications, business and technical support for the two major systems of PMKeyS (human resource management), ROMAN/BORIS (financials), as well as technical and development support for SDSS (supply chain).

Application Development Branch (ADB) is responsible for the detailed DII planning, design and support of authorised Business Application projects and common services (including Identity and Access Management; Internet, Intranet and Extranet Services and Minor User Applications).

Network Delivery Branch (NDB) develops and supports a wide range of corporate ICT infrastructure that forms part of the DII. The infrastructure includes user devices, systems hardware, data networks and communications bearers. NID integrates these systems into the DIE.

The Information and Communications Technology Operations Division (ICTOD) / J6 is the responsible for delivering the Defence Information Environment as a global end to end capability including the provision of satellite communications, electromagnetic spectrum and networks to support military operations. The Head of the Division is the principal strategic adviser (Strategic J6) to the Chief of Defence Force and Commander Joint Operations on communications and information systems and electromagnetic spectrum.

Defence Strategic Communications Branch (DSCB) J63 is a component of the Defence Network Support Agency (DNSA) which provides ICT services to Defence through:
- Strategic, tactical interface and military communications planning and support to the Commander Joint Operations (CJOPS),
- Operation and support of the Defence Wide Area Communications Network providing the infrastructure to support delivery of services including DRN, DSN, TS and Voice networks,
- Operation and support of Defence voice and video services,
- DIE Information Security services, and
- Development and maintenance, through policy and procedures, of COMSEC integrity throughout the ADF by ensuring quality management at the Command and Custodial level.

The Defence Information Services Branch (DISB) J66 is a component of the Defence Network Support Agency (DNSA) which provides ICT services to Defence through the provision of infrastructure, applications support and processes across the Distributed Computing environment (DRN, DSN, DTSN and Voice networks). The scope of DISB activities includes IT service management, customer engagement, regional, central and global ICT support, DIE transition management and vendor management of significant ICT outsourcing contracts with KAZ and Unisys.

The ICT Policy and Plans Branch (ICTPPB) J65 manages and coordinates the DII capability on a short to mid-term basis (less than five years). This includes support to military operations; electromagnetic spectrum management; prioritising project proposals for inclusion on the Information Investment Program; planning and oversight of the related expenditure; and policy and doctrine development related to communications and information systems.

The Chief Operating Officer Branch (COOB) provides a focal point for finance, governance, organisation performance, and all aspects of business office management support to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) Group. This includes: human resources, financial management, contracting and procurement, quality management, corporate governance, commnunication and customer service management. The Branch develops and implements relevant business policies and coordinates, manages, monitors and evaluates human, financial and other resources allocated or attributed to the CIO Group. It also coordinates and manages a range of support activities for the CIO and the CIO Group.
