Chief Information Officer Group
Graduates in CIOG
Transcipt - Brad Shipp
Knowing Defence to be a large Department with a variety of career path options, I was immediately attracted to the Australian Government Information Management cadetship program of which Defence is a partner.
The cadetship program was presented to me with an array of possibilities including the opportunity to a part of a week long internationally recognised management course, know as Prince 2. This accreditation is a great stepping stone in achieving a career path as a Project Manager in Defence. A rewarding part of the cadetship program has been the ability to apply for temporary positions within the Chief Information Officer Group, which I experienced in May when I accepted a position of a Project Support Officer.
I found the transition to working within my field of Information and Communication Technology has been smooth and satisfying with my working environment teaching me even more about my field and how to approach the implementation of my studies. I have always wanted to work in the public sector and the cadetship program within Defence has provided the entry point for my career, already with my acceptance of a an APS 4 temporary position as a Project Support Officer in a major Human Resource Project, I have been able to see the possibilities of furthering my career particularly in Defence.
Although I have not had to move to Canberra to take part in the cadetship program, I have found that working in Defence in Canberra is very rewarding as no matter which base I work from there are desired amenities and outdoor areas at which to relax and unwind Canberra has the eventful aspects of a major city, while providing a comparatively more relaxed lifestyle. I would encourage any university student with an Information and Communication Technology major to take the opportunity and apply for a placement in the cadetship program offered through the Australian Government Information Management office.
