Chief Information Officer Group

Graduates in CIOG

Transcipt - Jessica Lee

The opportunity to work in a Government Department that supports the troops, our country and its national interests inspired me to pursue the Defence Graduate Development Program. Getting a snapshot of various areas in Defence within your 3 month rotation is something you don’t usually get in your career and is a huge advantage of the Defence Graduate Development Program.

With such a large Department, each area of Defence is like no other. I have had the privilege of working with the Fleet Air Arm in Nowra in NSW, Defence Support Groups Infrastructure Assets Division in Northern Territory and Western Australia and the Chief Information Office Group in ACT. The extensive training provided by the Defence Graduate Development Program and on the job experiences from my rotations allowed me to further develop my soft skills and apply my knowledge in Project management, Business Analysis and Information Management.

My final placement required me to work on a project initiated by my third rotation with Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, by having the knowledge of their business and having previously worked with key stakeholders this allowed me to excel. The networks I have developed throughout my rotations in Defence have been invaluable. To this day I still keep in contact with the areas I have worked with and on a few occasions our work has crossed paths, so knowing the right person to talk to is definitely an advantage. From my experiences, I would recommend all university students looking to further their career to apply for the Defence Graduate Development Program. The programs rotation structure helps immensely in networking and building up a foundation of knowledge.
