Op Astute Troops celebrate Christmas in East Timor

A number of Australian Defence Force personnel deployed to East Timor have taken time on Christmas morning to share gifts and food with local residents in Dili.

Troops stationed at Camp Phoenix enjoyed a morning walk in the streets near the base where they distributed toys and lollies to the children. For the adults in the local neighbourhood, the Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen and women brought food from the Camp Phoenix mess.

While the situation in East Timor has continued to stabilise over the past year and the economy has improved, there are still a number of people around the country living in poverty. Overcoming these problems by not only working to ensure the peace holds, but through engaging in capacity building projects has become an important focus of the International Stabilisation Force in East Timor.
