Christmas cheer for troops overseas

A letter on behalf of 14 Australian soldiers providing artillery support for international forces at an isolated outpost in the dangerous Helmand Province in Afghanistan has triggered a wave of Aussie Christmas cheer for our troops overseas. Facing a bleak Christmas alone and missing quality Australian food, the small contingent wrote to Australia's largest Christmas hamper company, Chrisco, requesting any left over Christmas goodies to be mailed to them. Chrisco hasn't just answered the call from these lonely troops. Working closely with the Australian Defence Force, it has
arranged a special shipment to be flown to Afghanistan in time for Christmas and hampers jam-packed with some
favourite Aussie treats and staples to be sent to soldiers serving in the Solomon Islands and Timor.

The Australian Defence Force's Chief of the Joint Operations Command, Lieutenant General Mark Evans, said the generosity of the Australian public and corporate sector is very welcome.

“Our troops work hard in dangerous and challenging environments and they take great comfort in knowing that the Australian community is supporting them. Receiving these gifts from Chrisco is a great morale boost at a time when deployed members will be missing their families most,” he said.

On Monday 14 December, hampers bound for the Solomon Islands will fly out from Brisbane with the Timor shipment departing from the RAAF base in Darwin. The Afghanistan delivery leaves Sydney via aircraft on Tuesday 15 December.
