Sniper


The Sniper is a Rifleman (infantryman) selected for his highly developed fieldcraft, marksman and observation skill. The sniper generally works as part of a two-man team. He is employed either as a shooter or observer spotter, and may alternate between these roles. The sniper team is an important link in the intelligence gathering chain. The Sniper is able to locate and report on enemy movements and dispositions. He is able to stalk or wait unseen to engage and kill, with one shot, selected personnel or equipment targets at ranges up to 1500m. The sniper's skill is of immense value in war due to the destructive effect upon enemy morale and operations of his actions. The sniper is an ARA only employment category due to the length of time it takes to acquire the necessary skills.


Duties

  • Provide precision fire support utilising the 7.62mm SR-98, 7.62mm SR-25 or .50 cal Anti-Material Rifle.
  • Analyse environment factors, collect shooting data and calculate single shot adjustments.
  • Supplement unit surveillance and gather intelligence.
  • Employ tracking and counter-tracking techniques.
  • Establish and maintain VHF, HF and Satellite communications.
  • Apply advanced First Aid techniques (Combat First Aider).
  • Coordinate Offensive Support (OS) and close air support (CAIRS).
  • Provide overwatch to manoeuvre elements.
  • Provide battlefield commentary and advice to commanders.

Employment Training

Basic Sniper Course is conducted in an ARA Infantry Battalion - Duration 34 days.
Team Leader Sniper Course is only conducted at the School of Infantry - Duration 30 days.
Sniper Supervisor Course is only conducted at the School of Infantry - Duration 10 days.

Employment Location

The Sniper is an ARA only employment category with postings available in Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Darwin and Singleton.

Civil Accreditation

This employment category meets the same requirements as Rifleman ECN 343.
